Throughout production, wafers are cleaned and rinsed hundreds of times to remove microscopic particles, chemical residues, and contaminants before advancing to the next process. At today's manufacturing tolerances, even trace levels of contamination can impact product quality. Ultra-pure water (UPW) systems are designed to remove dissolved ions, organic compounds, particles, bacteria, and dissolved gases, producing water that approaches the theoretical purity limit of H₂O. Maintaining that level of purity isn't just a water treatment challenge — it's a critical factor in protecting wafer yield, minimizing defects, and ensuring consistent manufacturing performance. ### The Journey to Ultra-Pure Water Producing UPW requires multiple treatment stages, each removing different contaminants before the water reaches production tools. The challenge doesn't end once the water is purified. No single measurement tells the entire story. Instead, semiconductor facilities monitor several key parameters to verify water quality and identify changes before they impact production. #### **Specific Conductivity / Resistivity** One of the most important indicators of water purity is ionic contamination. As dissolved ions increase, conductivity rises while resistivity decreases. Semiconductor facilities typically strive for water with a resistivity approaching **18.2 MΩ·cm**, making continuous conductivity and resistivity monitoring essential throughout the UPW system. Small changes can provide early warning of treatment system degradation or contamination long before product quality is affected. #### **Sodium** Sodium is one of the most closely monitored ionic contaminants in semiconductor manufacturing. Even extremely low concentrations can affect sensitive fabrication processes, making continuous sodium analysis an important safeguard for UPW systems. #### **Silica** Silica monitoring helps verify polishing system performance and detect breakthrough before deposits can impact downstream processes or equipment. #### **Dissolved Oxygen** In selected portions of the UPW system, dissolved oxygen monitoring helps verify deaeration performance, minimize corrosion, and maintain stable operating conditions. #### **Flow** Flow measurement confirms consistent water delivery throughout the distribution loop while helping operators identify abnormal operating conditions. #### **Pressure** Pressure monitoring provides visibility into pumps, filters, membranes, and treatment equipment, allowing maintenance teams to identify restrictions or declining performance before failures occur. #### **Level** Reliable level measurement helps ensure continuous UPW availability by monitoring storage capacity and supporting uninterrupted production. #### **Temperature** Temperature directly influences water quality measurements and overall system stability. A comprehensive strategy combines analytical instrumentation with process measurements throughout the treatment and distribution system, providing operators with continuous insight into water quality from the treatment plant to the point of use.
